We've all heard of Pokerus, right? That disease that Pokemon catch from time to time, the one that can be passed through being in the same party?
It's supposedly painless and doesn't harm your Pokemon. But do we really know for sure? Few Pokemon want to give up their battling to be laid up only because of an illness. Perhaps they simply ignore it and move on. But the most important thing to remember...
The side effects last forever.
The only known side effect of Pokerus is nothing but beneficial. It raises the amount of experience the infected Pokemon gains.
But why is that? Does it somehow make them stronger, make them battle harder? Does it simply make them more violent? I can be one to tell you the real story of pokerus.
I was playing Pokemon Diamond with my beloved Charizard transferred from my FireRed version. I cherished that Pokemon - my very first Pokemon ever. I'd just raised him to level 60, so I opened up his profile to check his new stats. And that's when I saw the tiny pink box at the bottom of the screen, reading "PKRS."
Now, at the time, I had no idea what it meant, so I pulled up Google and researched it. After reading up and discovering that my Charizard would actually grow better with the disease, I was excited. Not even thinking about what could happen to my Charizard, I shut my laptop off and picked my game back up to begin grinding him.
Within an hour, I'd ground him to level 76. Awesome! Finally I had some help with training.
My happiness didn't last very long.
When I went to the Pokemon Center to heal, Nurse Joy's text seemed off. I'm pretty sure she said something like "Your CHARIZARD appears to be in pain...you should let it rest," or something similar. But I brushed it off as being a part of the Pokerus. If only I'd listened...
I noticed something strange about Charizard after I opened his profile back up, as if its expression looked...somehow sadder, or in pain. The flame on its tail looked slightly smaller, too. Again, I brushed it off as only a minor part of his Pokerus.
After each battle, I noticed more changes on Charizard. Blood appeared on his wings, and its eyes became bloodshot. What seemed to be claw marks appeared on its stomach, and its flame grew smaller - and looked as if it was soaked in blood.
By now, I was freaked. This was too much to just be a part of the Pokerus. Maybe it was some sort of easter egg that was unlocked after a Pokemon caught Pokerus? Whatever it was, I wanted it to end. I took Charizard to the Pokemon Center, hoping his wounds could be healed.
Biggest mistake I've ever made.
I mashed the A button, just wanting her to heal my Charizard. But the healing animation didn't play. My blood stopped cold when I read the text...
"Your CHARIZARD is in critical condition! We must heal it quickly!"
The usual healing animation played, except...slower. When she turned back to me, she said "Your CHARIZARD couldn't make it...I'm sorry for your loss."
My eyes went wide, and I opened up my party. Sure enough, Charizard wasn't there, nor in any of my PC boxes. My beloved Charizard, gone forever. Because of this damned Pokerus. And it was all my fault...
I started crying over the loss of my charizard. When I could finally concentrate on my game again, I was in the Lost Tower. A warped 8-bit version of the Lost Tower's usual music played. The screen seemed darker than usual, and the fog was thicker than it had ever been. A blood red text box popped up. It read...
"Why did you let me die...?"
"I didn't want to displease you..."
"You pushed me too hard..."
"...I was SICK..."
"When you were sick...I let you rest..."
"Why didn't you do the same...?"
"Why did you let this happen to me, Master...?"
"It still lingers..."
"I can never rest in peace..."
I almost threw up when I saw the twisted Charizard sprite show up.
Both its eyes were gone, leaving empty, bloody sockets. A green liquid bubbled out of its open jaws. Its claws were missing from its hands and feet, revealing blood to be dripping from the holes. A deep claw mark was cut into its stomach, revealing a river of blood dripping out.
A slowed down, demonic version of Charizard's cry played.
A text box popped up. The text was crimson red.
"You see what you did to me?!"
"So much PAIN..."
"Master...you want to help me, don't you?"
A Yes/No box popped up.
I immediately clicked Yes, then wondered if that was the best decision.
"You will help me, Master."
"CHARIZARD used Pain Split!"
I immediately felt nauseous. It felt as if someone had stabbed me in the stomach. My eyes blurred, and I started vomiting a green liquid. I could barely breathe. The pain got worse to the point where I passed out.
It took weeks to recover...no doctor could figure out what was wrong. It wasn't the flu. It wasn't a recorded disease. So they just let nature run its course.
After I finally recovered, I decided to restart my FireRed to raise a new Charizard. I picked Charmander and went through the beginning. After Charmeleon finally evolved weeks later, I checked my new Charizard's stats.
At the bottom, there was a pink box reading PKRS.
